Im trying to decide which amp to buy. My setup options are :
3 Alpine Type R DVC 2ohm 10" subs wired at 1.3 Ohm with the sundown 1500d for around 2000 watts total.
or
3 Alpine Type R DVC 2ohm 10" subs wired at 3 Ohm with the alpine mrp-m2000 for around 1750 wattts total. (maybe even 2000 @ 3 ohm from what doug's bench showed)
I was really impressed with the alpine amp that Doug bench tested on that JL audio sub and everywhere you look you hear great things about sundown amps. I know that the 3 ohm load would probably sound a lot better and would be more efficient for the amp so im kinda leaning that way. Price for these 2 amps is about the same used.
Any input or comments would be appreciated.
1. If an amp from a solid manufacturer is rated down to 1 Ohm, or 2 Ohm, or whatever, it's been designed and tested to safely operate at that minimum impedance. If you kill an amp while operating it within spec then it's defective or you did something wrong. There's no reason to assume a monoblock amp needs a safety buffer and run it at less than its full potential.
2. Sound quality on a monoblock bass amp is a non-issue. Forget hearing a difference between different ohm loads, different damping factors, it's all nonsense. Our hearing is far less sensitive to changes in subbass than every other part of music. What's real is the effect of expectation bias. You want to hear a difference between setups so you do hear a difference.
3. Whether these subs get 2,000W or 1,750W is a non-issue. You will never hear the difference and it's not going to drastically change the amount of heat the voice coils need to dissipate.
They're both solid amps. Pick the one that physically fits your install better and/or costs less. Also, I agree that you want to look into a bigger alternator and the Big 3.

^^ x2 3 type r's is overkill IMO, and would require suspension upgrades to handle the weight... and 2 will get more power out of the amp...or 4 8"s would be a bitchin setup on the MRX-M240 as well...if it were me with that compact car, thats what id do.
Suspension upgrades? Are you kidding? They are 23lbs each. With the box its going to be ~100lbs. I dont think that requires a suspension upgrade. Also your 4-8" suggestion would be about the same weight.
As far as power goes, the Type-R 10's can handle 600 RMS x 3 so thats 1800 watts. The alpine mrp-m2000 isnt stable to 1Ohm so im going to have to run the setup at 3Ohm. The specs for the mrp-m2000 are:
RMS Power @ 4 ohms 1500 watts x 1 channel RMS Power @ 2 ohms 2000 watts x 1 channel
So at 3Ohm im looking at 1750 watts. Perfect for 3 10's.
I love all the input from people. Awesome.
I already have the 3 Type R 10's and i think i just found a local seller for a Sundown 1500d version 2. The box has a ways to go but once i get the amp ill be motivated to get it done fast.
As far as being too much system, maybe for some people but i've had this kind of power before and i want it again. So i know what im getting into.
As far as the weight goes i know it adds up fast, but i think suspension upgrades are something to be looked at way down the road. AFTER the electrical upgrades, complete system install, nice dress up, etc...

alpine amp and go with two 10s instead of three big three , upgrade battery . upgrade alt just my 2 cents... ps will this be for comps or daily driver
Oh sorry, missed this a while back. Daily driver for sure.
Well, Ive had a few different systems in the past. 2 Had more power than this. We all start small so here goes:
2 MTX Terminator 12's on a punch 200
2 Boston Acoustic Pro series 10's on an adcom amp of somekind.
2 Rockford Power Series 12's (with the big ass chrome magnets) on a RF Power 800a.2
4 Rockford Power Series 12's on 2 RF Power 800a2's
2 Kicker L7 12's each on a RF Power 800a2
The 2 kickers was my most recent. That was about 2 years ago.
Also went ahead and got the sundown amp today. How do you tell if its a V1 or V2?
Someone said the V1 has fuses on the outside? V2 does not?
