how substantial are having dedicated mid-bass woofers? (ie. 6.5" or even 8" woofers)
what kind of power would be nominal to run such a setup?
reason i ask is i just dont find components to provide enough mid level punch and fill.... the tweets are great for the hights, and my subs handle the lows...but im lacking a lil in the middle.

Tuning ! If you don't have enough midbass impact it may not be because you don't have enough midbass, If the harmonics above the midbass region (500 to 1kHz) are not at the proper level you will not hear the midbass fundamentals correctly. Also if the next set of harmonics 1.2 to 2kHz are too hot it will make the midbass seem too thin. You need 31 band eq.
If you are going two way + sub get the bit ten, if you want three way + sub get bit one. Many speakers are not designed to be sealed, they are designed for infinite baffle. To make sure you get the most midbass just dynamat the frame so that there are no holes close to the speaker. It is the backwave/frontwave combination that kills midbass. Tuning is going to take some dedication however, you can't expect great sound out of a 1 hour tune session and you can't just RTA it flat either.
Good setup would be 6.5 inch mids crossed at 60Hz at 24db slope. Cross mids and tweeters around 4kHz with 24db slope.
Get a bit processor if you want to really get into SQ and fine tuning. Otherwise go with something like the MS-8 that will autotune for you. Just going to 3 way with dedicated midbass will give you more midbass simply because you can turn up the midbass driver but this will not give you better SQ without tuning.
Also you can get better midbass by simply time aligning your drivers by ear.
Use CD's or at minimum 320kbps mp3 files.
I am assuming that you are talking about the imprint add on module that goes with alpine HU's. It is good if you already have an alpine HU so for an extra $150 you can have a processor. Keep in mind that you can use the the 7 bandGEQ/5band PEQ OR the auto tune function. I have not personally heard Imprint, but there are many complaints online about weak midbass. I believe it is because IMPRINT for the most part gives you a flat response. This is not the best solution because this causes the midbass and bass to sound weak resulting in a brighter sound. Despite this IMPRINT is good because it will level match your L/R speakers automatically for you giving you an awesome stereo image and it time aligns your drivers giving you a nice center image. There are two modes, three way (tweeters, woofers, sub) and two way (front, rear, sub) so you would be fine going active.
