10" or 12" Sub That's Impressive?

I'm curious to know what's out there in the 10" or 12" sub size and doesnt require alot room (ex. 4-8" deep) most likely gonna port the box just because I believe that the best sound quality/output. But worst case scanerio just in case i cant port this kind of enclosure properly may have to do sealed. I really want this sub to perform as powerful as two 12"s don't know how possible that can get. I know alot of it is based on the box but the downside is the enclosure I plan on making for the left hand side of my trunk (ex. not my car ..... I was considering using one of my alpine type r's but just wanted to know what else is out there that'll respond alittle better and wouldn't mind 800 watt rms @ 2 ohms

A 12W7 is equal to 2 12W6s in out put. And if you stick it in a 1.75 cube ported box it becomes almost like 2 12w7. Thing is if you want performance like you are specifying, you'll have to pay for it. A 13w7 plays like 1.5 12w7, but not on that amp. Food for thought.

The Type R's are pretty awesome. For the money I'd have to say go Type R.......if money isn't an issue W6 or W7.

i dont know how i feel about 1 12w7 being equal to 2 12w6's in output. a 12 is a 12 if you're talking cone area. I agree that the power handling is roughly equal but i think he's planning on using the same amp, so its really not going to be much louder. Changing subs makes some difference but not a ton. Sundown SA-12 would be a good pick if you ask me.

Thanks for some input guys. Right now I have 1 type r hooked up to my 1 alpine mrp-m850 amp. I like it a lot but it's in a ported box which isn't the best specs. The bad part is how do you go about porting a custom fiberglass side enclosure properly. And because porting seems to be the best way I really wanna port this new setup. In most cases ported enclosures require a lot of space to make it properly. I know JLs require a lot of space in a ported box. Which wanted me to venture out and see what other brands are good solid products that can take the abuse and sound really decent and also don't require a lot of space when ported

Your best bet on porting with a fiberglass box is an aeroport. I would suggest going with a 10 as it will require less airspace.

How much space do you consider to be "a lot of space"? The volume required for a ported box is always going to be more than the volume required for a sealed box. If you need a box like the one in your picture it's going to have to be sealed. It sounds like you want a small box and you also want it ported, but those don't generally go hand-in-hand. Maybe you need to look into box designs that are long and shallow, if that will give you the desired output where you'll be sitting.

Nothing wrong with the Alpine's you have, they just need to be in the proper ported enclosure

Check that out i show it to customers all of the time..it really helps.

I love everything W7, have 2 10s myself and I used to have 2 12 type rs and the w7s are 4db (just over double) louder with slightly more power

when space is a concern but sq is a must always 8w7, even 2 8w7s take up the same space as 1 12w7

FI Q12. Less than 1.5 cubic ft sealed box and it sounds nice.

See here's the thing a friend of mine has a w7 12 he's selling for 250. And I kind of liked the performance on jl subs. Now isn't it worth it to replace my two type r's with this one jl sub. I've come to the realization that I wouldn't be able to make a small enclosure just because the kind of subs I want it wouldn't work out. So to keep or not to keep is the question.

Well a 12w7 for $250 is a good deal. Your amp will be pretty good on the 12w7 ported, not enough power for sealed, but if you've already got a pair of 12 type rs ported...I think at this point you'd be better off spending money on a nice MRP-M2000, those type rs will slam on 2kw ported...the w7 would sound tighter and mor detailed for sure but if output is all your after the type r is perfect and has decent SQ

Or you could prob find another mrpm850 on eBay for cheap, so think about your current setup just properly tuned with double the power

As it is I have each type r on there own m850 but still... It's alot of bass but at high volumes it's not too clean so that's why I wanted to build a box for them but still wanted to see what subwoofer could come close to the output I have if not beat it and be something simple I have faith that the type r's can handle alot of power for the most part but I don't believe they would have the sq behind it. I may just get the w7 and build a box just in case so I don't miss out on a deal anyways

Well you can't go wrong with a w7 but the type rs really have decent SQ in the right box, especially for their price, but if ultimate SQL is what you want then a w7 is the only way to go IMO and $250 is cheap, I'd look at selling all the alpine gear you have now as a package and then snag a nice 1200w mono to get the most out of that w7...or a pair of 12w6s have better SQ than a w7 and will hit about as hard as your current type rs in the right box on the amps you already have....don't forget a w7 is a 3 ohm nominal woofer, so your going to be making around 600rms @3 with the mrpm850
